Understanding ankle fractures

An ankle fracture involves one or more bones of the ankle joint. Ligaments may also be injured, affecting how well the joint holds its position.

Treatment and care

Stable fractures may be managed with a cast or boot. Displaced or unstable injuries may need surgery. Follow-up checks alignment, healing and the right time to increase activity.

Questions to discuss with your clinician

Use this guide to prepare for an individual discussion. The right next step depends on your diagnosis and circumstances.

  • What findings support this diagnosis, and could another condition explain my symptoms?
  • Do I need any investigations before choosing treatment?
  • Which options are suitable, and what are their benefits and risks?
  • What changes should prompt another assessment?
  • How will the condition affect everyday activities and follow-up?

Common questions

How is an ankle fracture diagnosed?

Your clinician examines the ankle and usually requests X-rays. Further imaging may be needed to understand a complex injury.

Can I walk on a fractured ankle?

Follow the weight-bearing advice given for your particular fracture. Being able to walk does not rule out a break.
