ACL reconstruction: a treatment guide

Surgery to restore knee stability after an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

About the procedure

ACL reconstruction replaces the damaged ligament with a graft. It is usually performed with arthroscopic assistance, with the graft secured inside the knee.

Planning your treatment

Your assessment considers instability, other knee injuries and the activities you want to return to. Rehabilitation before and after surgery is an important part of treatment.

Questions to discuss with your clinician

Use this guide to prepare for an individual discussion. The right next step depends on your diagnosis and circumstances.

  • What is the aim of this treatment in my situation?
  • What are the alternatives, including non-surgical care where appropriate?
  • Which risks matter most for my health and the planned procedure?
  • What preparation, rehabilitation and help at home might I need?
  • How will progress be reviewed, and who should I contact with concerns?

Common questions

Will reconstruction let me return to sport?

The aim is to improve stability, but return to sport depends on healing, strength and functional testing. Your team will guide the timing.

What graft is used?

Several graft options are available. Your surgeon will discuss which is appropriate and the reasons for that recommendation.
