Ankle arthroscopy: a treatment guide

Keyhole surgery to assess and treat selected problems within the ankle joint.

About the procedure

A small camera and fine instruments are passed through small incisions. This can allow treatment of scar tissue, inflammation or loose fragments inside the ankle.

Planning your treatment

Suitability depends on the cause of pain and findings from examination and imaging. Recovery instructions vary with the work performed inside the joint.

Questions to discuss with your clinician

Use this guide to prepare for an individual discussion. The right next step depends on your diagnosis and circumstances.

  • What is the aim of this treatment in my situation?
  • What are the alternatives, including non-surgical care where appropriate?
  • Which risks matter most for my health and the planned procedure?
  • What preparation, rehabilitation and help at home might I need?
  • How will progress be reviewed, and who should I contact with concerns?

Common questions

What can arthroscopy treat?

It may address selected cartilage injuries, loose fragments, scar tissue or impingement. It is not suitable for every cause of ankle pain.

When can I bear weight?

Your surgeon will give specific instructions based on the procedure. Some repairs need a period of protection before weight bearing increases.
