About the procedure
A revision replaces or adjusts part or all of an existing knee implant. The cause of pain or loss of function needs to be established before surgery is planned.
Planning your treatment
Assessment may include imaging and tests for infection. The surgeon will explain the required reconstruction, its risks and the rehabilitation likely to follow.
Questions to discuss with your clinician
Use this guide to prepare for an individual discussion. The right next step depends on your diagnosis and circumstances.
- What is the aim of this treatment in my situation?
- What are the alternatives, including non-surgical care where appropriate?
- Which risks matter most for my health and the planned procedure?
- What preparation, rehabilitation and help at home might I need?
- How will progress be reviewed, and who should I contact with concerns?
Common questions
Is pain alone enough to recommend revision?
No. Identifying the cause is important because revision may not resolve pain when the source is unclear.
Is revision more complex?
It can be. Implant removal, bone loss and soft tissue problems may require additional planning and specialised components.
